In the morning Kaden had breakfast ready by the time Lyra was showered and dressed. Ceremoniously, he pulled a chair out for her at the table. “Morning. Patricia said she’d start your shift so we could eat together.”

“While this is fantastic, you do know there’s a diner right next door?”

“True, but I know once you get in there you won’t sit down for hours. Selfishly, I wanted to have a last meal with you before I go.”

She shuddered. “Don’t say it that way.”

He waggled his eyebrows. “Getting superstitious?”

“No, but we shouldn’t put it out there in the universe.”

“Wow, where is the Lyra St. Claire who doesn’t believe in woo-woo things like that?”

“Are you kidding? My life over the last couple of years has been a roller coaster of bad stuff happening.” She slid into a chair and chuckled. “Sorry, that was a little dramatic.”

He crouched beside her and took her hand. “Are you having a breakdown?”

That made her snort. “Not yet, and a pity party is totally unnecessary. I love my life, and there were just as many good things that conspired to bring me here as the bad everyone seems bent on bringing up. I wish people hadn’t died, but I don’t regret living in Fairview—yet.”

“The murder naturally has you rattled, and last night’s escapade didn’t help,” he said reasonably. “And a couple of articles is not everyone.”

“I know, but it’s more than that. I don’t want to be the cause of bringing tragedy to town. It bothers me a great deal that because of me it could happen.”

“You can’t stop troubles people from doing what they do, and those murders were not your fault.”

She knew he spoke from his heart, and she desperately wanted to believe him. “Perhaps not, though I would like to understand why it keeps happening around me.”

“It must be frustrating and upsetting. I wish I could help work it out, but I know you’re in safe hands with Walker.” He winked. “I mean Finn.”

“He is a good sheriff.”

“I have no doubt. And he thinks a lot of you.”

Heat hit her cheeks. “Don’t be silly.”

Kaden rolled his eyes. “Can we not pretend anymore? He likes you and you like him. There, it’s out in the open.”

“Look, we’ve only recently become friends, and there’s nothing more to it than that,” she insisted.

“Hmmm.” Kaden stood and poured her coffee, then uncovered a plate of bacon and scrambled eggs. “So, your relationship is similar to yours and mine?”

She shrugged. “I guess.”

“Really?” He filled her plate and sat opposite her, then took a long swig of coffee. “Do you want to go on a date with me?”

The forkful of egg stalled on the way to her mouth. “Sure. We could do something together next week.”

“I mean a real date. We could hold hands and kiss. You know, girlfriend, boyfriend stuff.” He waggled his eyebrows suggestively.

Swallowing hard at the mouthful that decided to lodge in her throat, she drank some coffee and wiped her mouth on a napkin. “Kaden, what the heck are you talking about?”

“The truth is, I don’t interest you in that way.
